The Lady of Cockatrice Island 2024
A game writer sample set in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt universe.
Quest Summary
On the small isle of Hindarsfjall, in the even smaller village Larvik, school teacher MATER is searching for her pupil, 11 year old orphan RAKEL. Suspected to have gone into the nearby forest, Rakel has a incessant need to fight monsters, however unsuccessfully. She is determined to train herself so that she can face the cockatrice that prevails on the neighbouring island, nicknamed (as you may guess) Cockatrice Island. The locals believe that a fair maiden was once trapped in the old watchtower there and slaying the beast would bring great honour. Rakel, however, believes that her mother may be on the island and requests the help of GERALT of Rivia. Unwilling to let a child walk into her very likely death, Geralt takes it upon himself to discover who, or what, is locked on Cockatrice Island.

There a multiple endings to the playthrough, depending on the order and choices made.

New Location
The village Larvik (1) on Hindarsfjall, as well as the woods (2) Brenna goes in earlier in the quest, are already present in the Witcher 3 universe.
The new location created for this mission is the Cockatrice Island (3). The island has a hill with an old, abandoned watchtower on it. The watchtower was initially built to protect Hindarsfjall, but was abandoned when the cocktrice decided to make the island its home. There is a cave network within the hill which leads to the watchtower. Inside the watchtower is quite spartan, though there is a telescope, initially used to watch the horizon for enemies. |
New Characters
RAKEL, 11
It seems as though the world is against Rakel. Not only did her father die long before she could remember his face, but her mother mysteriously disappeared when she was 8, leaving her orphaned. Forced to stay with a family she barely knows, Rakel is angry at everyone and everything. However, she refuses to let it show. To an outsider, Rakel seems confident, feisty, even a little cocky. Forced to grow up so quickly, Rakel feels like she understands the world around her very well. She knows that showing weakness is something that will only disadvantage her. However, deep down, Rakel is only a scared child, desperately clutching at the straws of her old life and seeking comfort where she cannot find it. |

MATER / UZMA, 65
Mater became a schoolteacher after she quickly decided she never wanted to get married. After the mysterious disappearance of her lover, Sylvi, Mater has led a solitary life. She is quiet, patient, somewhat strict and very no-nonsense, however inside she is a deep romantic, who holds onto a lot of hope. Mater has faced the fact that she will always be alone. The only one who ever understood her was Sylvi. She tells herself that‘s the way life is, but still hopes that something will change... |
SYLVI, 25
Sylvi and Uzma were in love, but their love was not recognised. To prove to Uzma‘s family that she was just as good a suitor as any other man, Sylvi was determined to bring honour to herself, by killing the famed cockatrice. However, she died from the cockatrice’s wounds in the tower, after narrowly escaping the beast. Sylvi presents herself as strong, brave and overconfident, though she harbours many angry and anxious emotions within herself. Sylvi has all her life tried to prove people wrong. When Uzma began to doubt whether they could ever be together, it was the last straw for Sylvi. Sylvi acts before thinking, which landed her in her predicament. |
